The
Front Line
Perinatal
Nursing Symposium
by
Joseph A. Garcia-Prats, MD
The
year 2000 marks the 24th annual Baylor Outreach Perinatal
Nursing Symposium (October 27, 2000). This very popular educational
event for perinatal nurses began in 1976 through the efforts of
Dr. Arnold Rudolph and with grant support from the Gulf Coast
Chapter of the March of Dimes. Attendance has increased annually;
last year more than 200 neonatal and perinatal nurses attended
from Houston and the surrounding communities—some from as far
as Oklahoma and Louisiana.
The
symposium will be kicked off with Micromanaged: Providing quality
care in a managed care environment, presented by Pam Klauer Triolo.
Ms. Triolo is Chief Nursing Executive and Senior Vice President
of Organizational Effectiveness for The Methodist Health Care
Systems in Houston. She is a knowledgeable speaker and, undoubtedly,
her timely topic will stimulate thoughtful discussion. Some other
program topics include:
- A ray of hope: Care of the very tiny infant.
- How sweet it is: Tight control in diabetic pregnancy.
- The maternal-infant project: A world–wide approach to decreasing
infant mortality.
- HIV: New antiviral therapy guidelines for mother and infant.
Up
to 8 CNE hours can be earned that meet Type I criteria for mandatory
continuing education requirements for relicensure by the Texas
State Board of Nurse Examiners. The symposium will be at the Hyatt
Regency, downtown Houston, 7:45 a.m.–5 p.m., Fri., Oct. 27, 2000.
Program Director is Joseph Garcia-Prats, MD; Program Coordinator
is Colleen Brand, MSN, RNC, NNP.
